Victor Reader Classic +Update for Victor Reader Classic +
(103VRC)
Version 3.0.7 and 2.3.56

Here are the upgrade steps which should work with most CD burning programs (like Eazy CD or Nero).

1. Download the file according to the language you want in the list following the instructions.

2. Execute the auto decompression by clicking on the file.

3. Use the file to make a CD, using the "make a CD from an image file and/or burn image" option. (Note: Don't drag the .iso file into the file list as you would normally do when you make a regular CD because it will not work properly.

4. Insert that CD into an AC-powered Victor Reader Classic and follow the spoken instructions. At the end of the update, the player will power off without ejecting the CD. Power on the unit again then the update CD will eject.

Please note the following modifications in the spoken instructions: press the play-stop key rather than the confirm key and press the eject key rather than the cancel key.

Version 2.3.56

Available languages :

English (North American) 2.3.56
English (British) 2.3.56
Korean 2.3.56

The new 3.0.7 version includes the following:

Version 3.0.7 is the latest firmware release for the Victor Reader Classic and Classic+ DAISY CD players. Unless noted otherwise; all features apply to both Victor Reader Classic and Classic+.

1. Support of DAISY 3 NISO Digital Talking Books

Most DAISY book producers now supply DAISY version 2 books and are considering the production of books in the new ANSI/NISO Z39.86 standard also referred to as DAISY 3. The Victor Reader Classic and Classic+ will now support DAISY 3 NISO audio books if your book producer provides them. For more information on the DAISY 3 NISO standards please visit: http://www.niso.org/standards/resources/Z39-86-2002.html

2. Improved Playback of Non DAISY CD’s

  • Ability to play a wider variety of MP3 books and audio files

  • Ability to play Blackstone commercial audio books

  • Ability to play MP3 files stored in nested sub-folders. There is no limit to the nesting level other than the maximum file path length cannot exceed 512 characters. You can navigate the MP3 tree structure at folder or file level.

  • Ability to play M3U play lists

  • Ability to play WAV files in PCM, ADPCM, and GSM610 formats

  • Ability to play Ogg vorbis audio files

  • Save Current Position: Victor will now save the current playback position of non DAISY audio files when you power off.

3. Book Navigation Improvements

  • Accelerated Fast Forward and Rewind: the movement of the Fast Forward and Rewind keys will accelerate the longer you hold the keys down. For the first 3 seconds, movement is as before. For each 3 seconds you continue to hold the keys you will move forward or backward 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, and so on. The largest jump is 5 minutes for each 3 seconds the key is held down. Victor will announce the time jumps.

  • Fixed Time Jump: A new time jump mode has been added to the navigation levels selected with the up/down keys. While in Time Jump mode you will move backward or forward by 1 minute jumps for each press of the left or right arrow key.

  • Page Jump: While in page navigation mode you can now press and hold the left or right arrow key to jump backward or forward 10 pages at a time. This was a feature of the Classic which has been added to the Classic+.

  • Goto Heading: If you press the GoTO Page button twice you will select the new Goto Heading feature. This is useful for books which do not have page navigation and you want to jump randomly. For example, suppose a book has chapters marked as level 1 headings but it has no page markers. You could jump directly to a chapter by going to its relative heading number rather than having to advance sequentially through the headings.

  • INFO key Total Headings: To support the new Goto Heading feature, the INFO key reports the total number of headings in the book.

  • End of Book: If you are positioned at the end of the book and press the Play key, Victor will automatically go to the beginning of the book.

4. User Features

  • The power-off SLEEP timer of the Victor Reader Classic+ has now been added to Victor Reader Classic. To select SLEEP mode on the Classic, press the INFO key twice and then use the left/right arrows to select the amount of time Victor will play before it powers off.

  • SLEEP message: Previously, when Victor powered off at the end of the SLEEP timer, it would issue two loud beeps. If you did happen to fall asleep, you could be awakened by these loud beeps. Victor will now simply announce, “Sleep off” when it powers off. It will also announce a warning message when only 1 minute of SLEEP time remains.

  • Save Settings: When Victor powers off, it will save your current settings for tone, volume, and speed for the next playback session.

  • INFO Key Title: The INFO key will now report the book title.

  • Key Describer: The Key Describer mode has been changed for Victor Reader Classic. You can now enter Key Describer mode by pressing and holding the INFO key. Key Describer mode will continue to be activated if Victor is turned on without a CD. However, each press of a key will no longer announce, “no disk” as before.

  • Low Battery Warning: The power spike required to spin up the CD sometimes falsely triggered this warning even though considerable battery life remained. To avoid confusion this early battery warning message has been removed.

The 2.3.56 version includes the following:

1. SLEEP added to Classic

The user may now invoke SLEEP by pressing twice on the INFO key. He will hear "Sleep off". He can then press the left/right arrows to rotate through 15, 30, 45, or 60 minute sleep activation. After SLEEP is activated, the user may press INFO twice to hear the time remaining until power off.

2. Remove Double Beep on SLEEP Power-off

For both Classic and Classic+ the player will not beep twice when power off is triggered by the SLEEP mode. This has been requested by many users who indeed fall asleep and are awakened by the loud double beep. Instead, the user will hear only the message, "sleep off" at the end of the sleep cycle and the player will turn off. There will also be a warning prompt when 1 minute of SLEEP time remains.

3. Save Settings on Power-Off

For both the Classic and Classic+ the settings for tone, volume, and speed will be preserved at power-off.

4. Save Position for non DAISY CD

For both Classic and Classic+ the current play position will be saved at power-off for non DAISY CD's.

5. Buffer Over-Run Bug Fix

A bug has been corrected which crashed the software for some books with a very long title phrase.

6. New Update procedure.

At the end of the update the player will power off without ejecting the CD. When the user powers on again the update CD will eject.
